The Youth Task Force
A group, appointed by the Howard County Council, called the Youth Task Force, researched for a year whether a Youth Commission would be beneficial to our community. Some of their findings were:
The 6 Keys to an Effective Youth Council which are:
1. Determine Council Membership
2. Ensure a Sound Infrastructure
3. Provide a Supportive Work Environment
4. Build Youth CAPACITY
5. Deepen Youth MOTIVATION
6. Negotiate OPPORTUNITIES for Access

93% of Students polled thought that youth must be part of the solution
-
96% of students thought that youth could contribute and communicate ideas to a board or a commission
-
They also had several recommendations to make on how the commission should work.

Leadership U
After the Task Force broke up, a group of students from Leadership U continued with the project. They were able to:

Contact Youth Task Force members to find out what had been done

Met with Councilwoman Sigaty to find out details on how to start a commission

Partnered with Voices for Change and started working with Meg Mekelburg
-
Contacted youth leaders and adult leaders in the county and held a kickoff event for the coalition
The Youth Coalition
The Youth Coalition were able to:
- meet with the 5 members of the County Council
- meet with Lois Mikkila and Kerri Hyde
- create a detailed proposal for the new structure of the Voices for Change Youth Coalition
- develop leadership skills and meet new people!
- make new contacts
